What we can’t do without in our bathrooms

The gadget that we’ve sworn by for the last 4 years… floor-level sensor lights that switch on automatically as soon as you enter the bathroom.

I can’t imagine having to switch on the full-on lights to pop to the toilet in the middle of the night.

We’ve used these Mr Beams ones for what seems like forever now. Highly recommended.

More baby hacks (from dad’s perspective)

While it’s still in my mind, some other winning things that helped in the first 2 years of baby:

A play-pen – definitely good to keep the little one enclosed as she started to roll, and crawl everywhere. However it only lasted a few months before she started clambering up the sides trying to escape and getting frustrated. We had to retire it at around 9 months. We used one a ‘portable’ version which worked well as we could fold it away.

Sleeping bags – it might sound obvious, but a definite winner for our wee one who basically never kept still. Following on from swaddling, these were a life-saver.

Dummies / Pacifiers – totally controversial, but they worked for ours, keeping her happy and relaxed for sleep. Note that we used a clip too (for year 1) so that they didn’t lose the dummies.

The products that worked for our baby from the start (now 2 years old), and which might work for you (no guarantees!) are listed below:

    • Sleepyhead sleeping pod for the newborn (to 6 months-ish) to peacefully sleep in while you get on with everything else! Portable and loved.
    • A top-rated sleigh cot for something that looks great, and that will last until they are about 2 (and possibly beyond if convertible).
    • A top-rated bouncer-seat – amazing comforting effect on the little one. We had one with an in-built vibrating element which seemed to make it even more effective.
    • Blackout film for baby’s bedroom windows. A life-saver to create blackout in their bedroom as they become more light-sensitive for sleeping.

    More to come soon!

  • Weird historic measurements in the UK: Miles per Gallon

OK so in the UK why do we use the performance term ‘miles per gallon’? I’m guessing the reason is simply that we haven’t updated it…

MPG is the number of miles covered per gallon of fuel, usually used as a performance measure in cars or other road-based vehicles. However we certainly do not buy petrol in gallons any more. The last time we used gallons as a unit of measurement at petrol pumps was over 30 years ago.

Therefore why don’t we just use miles per litre or MPL? Just a suggestion…

Very proud of my wife’s creation for our daughter’s birthday: a gluten-free Peppa Pig cake. A true show-stopper!

  • Doing my recycling bit at home

Doing my recycling bit at home

I came to the realisation this year that it would be a good idea for the environment, and for our garden, if I started composting our food waste. Better late than never!

After looking around I found a nice looking kitchen food-waste tin by Kilner. It was signed-off by the wife and we’ve never looked back.

The process is fairly simple. The food waste collects in the tin over the week, then at the end of the week (if not before), I head down to the bottom of the garden and bury the waste under soil. Youtube usefully taught me that this is the most effective way to get the waste to get recycled and produce very fertile soil in the process!

  • People of the UK have voted for their own Trump…

People of the UK have voted for their own Trump…

I am truly astounded that the UK public actually voted for their own version of Donald Trump. Boris Johnson is basically the same concept: and he successfully managed to convince the working-class that he is going to help them in some way. Mainly through lies.

With a very large marketing budget, and a briefcase full of lies, the brains of the non-thinkers have been warped into thinking that Boris Johnson is their best leader. Wow, now that’s the power of heavy-handed marketing (especially when you can use Facebook data).

I would have thought, after all we have seen regarding the Brexit car-crash together with the lies he clearly used then, that would be reason enough to vote against him. Perhaps I was just too logical in my thinking.

So onward we go, to make the UK ‘Great’ again(?) with a sell-off of the NHS, Scottish and Northern Irish independence, and a complete free-trade cut-off from the EU.
